About Hull Records

Hull City Archives (formerly Kingston upon Hull Record Office) contains a number of documents from the period 1558-1603. Most are calendared in L.M. Stanewell “City and county of Kingston upon Hull calendar of the ancient deeds letters miscellaneous old documents, &c., in the archives of the corporation.” Hull,1951, since which publication more have been discovered, some errors corrected and most re-numbered.

Where it is known, the Stanewell number (it is pronounced Stannywell) is also given here. Stanewell’s numbers were D.nn for deeds, L.nn for letters and M.nn for everything else. Within each category the documents were numbered in chronological order of their probable creation.
Deeds, which Stanewell placed in date order, have been completely re-ordered by property.
Letters calendared by Stanewell as L.nn are now BRL/nn, and Elizabethan letters not in Stanewell, or not calendared by Stanewell as letters, have BRL numbers above 1000.
Stanewell’s miscellaneous category “M” has almost but not entirely, been dispersed to other designations.
The Bench Book of the period which is usually known, and is generally cited, as Bench Book Four, is now catalogued as BRB/2.
