Tempore Magistri Iohannis Gregorie Maioris ibidem Anno Regni Domine nostre Elizabeth Dei gratia anglie ffrauncie et hibirine regine fide defensor et cetera vicesimo primo et vicesimo Secundo / 1579 /

[In the margin] The eleccion of ye Maiour Imprimis of Wednesday the last day of September in the xxitie yeare afforesaid being the day
of the eleccion of the maiour Sheriffe & chamberlains of Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid Iaimes Clarkeson Maiour of the saime towne and his Brethren the aldermen accordinge to thauncient chartres liberties & customes of the said towne named and appointed to the Burgesses of the saime towne being assembled together in their common or guilde hawle for the elecion of the maiour Mr Iohn Gregorie & Mr William Smithe aldermen of them two to electe and choose thone of them to be the maiour of the said towne for one whole yeare of whiche two the said Iohn Thorneton Iaimes Clarkeson then Maiour thaldermen & burgesses did elect & chose the said Iohn Gregorye who then and there tooke vpon him that office and was sworne for the iuste and dewe execucuon thereof.

Item the saime day and yeare ye said Maiour and aldermen according to the tenour puporte & effect of the said charters did with one full assent and consent electe and choose the said Mr Iohn Gregorie to be the Quenes Maiestes admyrall within the toene & countie of Kingeston vpon Hull the towne of Dripoole and the precincte thereof and also throughe owt the water of Humber for one hole yeare next followinge who then was sworne for the dewe execucion of that office /

Item the daie and yeare abovesaid the said Mr Iohn Gregorie nowe maiour and thaldermen accordinge to thauntient Chres liberties & customes of this towne naimed and appointed Edward Preston & Robert Legerd to the said burgesses of them two to elect and chose thone to be Sheriffe of the towne and countie [f. 216v.] of whiche the said Maiour aldermen and Burgesses did elect & choose the said edward Preston who tooke vpon him yat office and was sworne for the dewe execucion thereof

Item the said last day of September the said Maior & aldermen to according to thauncient Customes Chartres liberties & customes of the said towne did nominate and appointe Thomas Empson William Porter Robert Dalton & lawrence Blacklocke to electe two to be chamberlaines of Kingeston vpon Hull of which fower ye said maiour aldermen and burgesses did electe and choose the said thomas Empson and Robert Dalton who were sworne for the dewe execucion of that office The said thomas empson beinge thelder chaimberlaine /

Item the saime day the said Mr Clarkeson and Mr edward Waikefeilde aldermen were chosen to be coroners with in the towne and countie of Kingeston vpon Hull who being then present tooke vpon him that office and were sworne for the dewe execucion thereof.

Item the said Maiour and aldermen beinge assembled together in their counsell howse within the guilde hawle of Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid the xiijtie day of october in the xxjtie yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth the Quenes moste excellent maiestie did with one full assent and consent condiscende conclude and agree yat Mr Richerd ffrancklande shall have vnder ye comon Seale of the maiour & burgesses of Kingeston vpon Hull a patente for the office of the [f. 217] of Recorder of this towne to have & to vse by his sufficient deputie for & during his naturale life. & yat he shall have for thexecutinge of the said office the yearely fee of iiijli. to be paid vnto him at Xpistenmas, Annunciacion of the blessed mary the Virgin, midsomer, and michelmas by even and equall porcoions / which patent was Sealed accordingly /

Item the first daie of october Anno predicto the said Maior and aldermen for and in the nayme of the said Maior and burgesses for xxiiijs to them by Mr William Wilson alderman paid did by virtewe of her maiestes graunte maid to the said Maiour and burgesses grant & give Licence to the said Mr Wilson to buy and transporte twelve quarters of Barley. /

Item the xvjth of october afforesaid the said Maiour and burgesses aldermen for and in the nayme of the said Maiour and burgesses for iijli xvs. to be paid at mich christinmas nexte by george Thompeson of Skarbroughe. did by virtewe of her Maiestes graunte maide to the saime Maiour & burgesses graunte and give Licence to the said george Thompeson to buy and transporte thirtie quarters of Malte for ye paiment of which iijli xvs the said george Thompeson & William Smithe Stande bownden by wroitings obligatorye /

Item the same daie & yeare the said Maiour & aldermen for and in the nayme of the said Maiour and burgesses. for vli to them by Iohn browne of Dizart paid did by vertewe of her maiestes graunt maid to the saime maiou and burgesses graunte & give Licence to the said Iohn Browne to buy and transporte xxviij quarters of beanes and xij quarrters of malte /

Item the eight daie of november afforesaid the said maiour and aldermen for & in the nayme of the said Maiour and burgesses for ixli vjs viijd to be to them paid before the xxxtie of november instant did by vertewe of her Maiestes graunte maide to ye saime, maiour & burgesses graunt & give licence to the said Iohn hewitt to buy & transporte fiftie quarters of malte & thirtie quarters of Beanes.

comynge to the Towne.Item the said Maiour and Aldermen did with full assent and consent dyd the xxiijth day of December Anno praedicto enacte order conclude and agrie That their should be two Surveyers in everie warde within this towne searche & enquire of persons latelie commen into the same wardes. / And that the same Surveyers shall everie xiiij daies make searche who is receyved into anie Warde, and to advertise the Alderman of the same, what they be that be soe receyved and howe longe they have continewed their: And he to conferre with Maister Maiour and the Aldermen his brethren for the tyme beinge what What they shall thinke expedient in this matter. /

Item the same day and yeare day is given to Thomas Scoles William Osgarbie Iohn Ulietson William Robertson and Xpistefer Wormeley to pay the monie which they owe to the towne videlicet the viijth day of Ianuarie nexte. /

[In the margin] Interest for monie owinge.
Item the said Maiour and Aldermen did with one full assent & consente the viijth day of Ianuarie Anno praedicto agreid ordered and appointed that all those which should have paid monie this day accordinge to a note remayninge in Mr Maiours custodie shall paie such intereste since the monie was dewe, as Mr Gee will have of the towne for monie owinge to him. /

Item the vijth day of Aprill Anno Elizabeth Regine Anno praedicto 1580 /
It is ordered and agreid by the said Maiour and Aldermen That Mr Wardall shall suffer the wall betwixt him and Mr Harrisons massendewe to stande; to be a fense foraver betwixte his grownde & the said massendewe And that in consideracion thereof he shall have paid him iiijs vjd: And the said Robert Wardall promiseth that he and his heires shall of their costs for ever upholde the same wall.

Memorand the xth day of May Anno predicto came into the usuall place for paymentes and Receiptes of monie within the Royall exchange in London William ffoxley of Kingston upon Hull marchante, and then and their by vertewe of a lettre of Attorney from Iohn Thorneton, Iames Clarckson William Wilson and Iohn ffawether merchantes Aldermen & Burgesses of Kingston upon Hull aforesaid dated the seconde day of May instante: demanded for and in their names and to their uses, of Iohn Stanhope of Bilton in Holderness in the Countie of York esquire the receipte of five hundreth and thirtie powndes of good and Lawfull monie of England dew and payable this day & in this place, accordinge to the tenour of a wrytinge [in]dented dated the viijth day of Ianuarie Last paste made betwixte the said Iohn Stanhope on thone partie, and the said Iohn Thorneton Iames Clarkeson, William Wilson and Iohn ffawether on thother partie, as by the same amonge other thinges more plainlie [f. 219] yt doth and may appeare, And for that neither the said Iohn Stanhopp nor anie his assignes, came to tender or pay the said monie somme of vCxxxli accordinglie, the said William ffoxley attending the receipte thereof, from the howre of vij of the clock in the mornynge untill after the settinge of the Sonne the day aforesaid: requested to have his said demaunde their Recorded, which was don in the presence of the Wytnesses heareunder named: viz. Item the xxiijtie day of iune Anno praedicto the said Maiour and Aldermen did with one full assent & consent & with the advice and consent of divers of the auncientest and most substanciall Burgesses of the same towne: inact order & agrie That the Lord Treasurer his lettre of the xvjth of Iune instante to the Maiour and Burgesses directed: written in the behalfe of Mr Iohn Stanhopp shalbe yelded unto: And a request to his Lordship to be made that is if Mr Stanhopp shall fayle of the payment of the monie which shalbe by him to be paid the xth of November next That then they to whome the new mortgage shalbe made shall have such dayes and tearmes for the payment of vijCli after the said xth of November as they had after the xth of May laste: And that the newe mortgage shalbe made to the said persons that the olde was made unto. /

Item the xxvjth day of Iuly Anno praedicto Meggs of the Cytie of London submitting himselfe to be ordered for vj barrells of sope lyinge in the wolhowse, solde at Beverley to a strainger is fyned to pay xxs whereof the informer is to have vs. /

Item the said Maior and Aldermen have with one full assent and consent ordered concluded and agreid the xxvijth of Iuly Anno predicto That all the Ayle wyves that kepe ayle to sell yt in this towne shall sell by this price viz. A quarte in the howse for a penie, and fyve gills forth of the howse for a penny. /

Item the xxviijth of Iuly Anno predicto yt is ordered & agreide by the said maior and Aldermen that Mr ffranklande beinge Mr Recorder shall have in respect of his travaile for the Towne this yeare taken fyve chalders of Newcastel coles sent him at the townes chardges. /

Item the same day and yeare by the Consent of the Warden & companie of taylors further day was given to Wydowe Andreton to occupie by her man as hearetofore he hath don untill Mychaelmas next And then without further delay she shall give over and noe more trade the occupacion of a taylor by her nowe man or any other. /

Item the same day and yeare yt was by the said Maiour and Aldermen ordered established and concluded that everie one that hath anie utterance for their water into the Streete shall before Bartholomewe day nexte make a grayte before their Gutter upon pain to forfeite for everie grate then not made. fyve shillinges. /
