Tempore Magisri Iohannis Smithe maioris Anino Regni domine nostre Elizabeth nunc Regine decimo quarto
[in the margin ] The elleccion of the Maiour
Inprimis vpon the last day of September in the yeare afforesaid and the day of the eleccion of the Maiour sheriffe and chaimberlaines et cetera Christofer Stockedayle Maiour & his Brethren thaldermen accordinge to the auncyent custome of this towne named and appointed to the Burgesses for the Maiour above named William Gee and Iohn Smithe aldermen to elect and choise thone of them Maiour Of whiche two the said xpistofer Stockedayle then Maiour thaldermen and burgesses with one assent and consent did naime and elect the said Iohn Smythe maiour who presently tooke the saime office and was Sworne for the iuste and dewe execucion of the same /

Item the sayme day and yeare the said maiour and aldermen accordinge to the tenor purport and effect of ye charter graunted to the maiour & burgesses of the saime towne did with one full assent & consent nominate elect and choise the said Iohn Smithe maiour to be the Quenes Maiestes admyrall within the towne and countie of Kingeston vpon Hull the towne of Dripoole and the precinct of the sayme and throwghe owt the water of Humber for and Duringe the tearme of one hole yeare who then was sworne for the dewe execucion of the sayme /

Item the day & yeare abovesaid the said Iohn Smithe Maiour & thaldermen accordinge to the auncient customs of and libertyes afforesaid named and appointed to the burgesses for ye eleccion of the Sheriffe Iohn hartcastle and william wilson Scarthe of whiche two the said maiour aldermen & burgesses did elect choise nominate & appoint william Scarthe who then beinge present tooke vpon [sic] the sayme office and and [sic] was then Sworne for ye dewe execucion thereof /

Item the said Last day of September the said maiour and aldermen accordinge to the auncyent customes and liberties of the said towne named and appointed to the burgesses for the eleccion of the chaimberlaines of the saime towne Iohn fiswicke Iohn whelpdayle Richard Loodge and Robert Loodge Legerd of whiche fower the said maiour aldermen & burgesses did elect and choise the said Iohn fiswicke and Iohn whelpdaile who were sworne for the dewe execucion of the saime. The said Iohn ffiswycke beinge elder chaimberlayne /

Item the sayme day and yeare xpistofer Stockedaile Laite Maiour and Iohn ffawether aldermen were elected to be coroners within the towne and countye of Kingeston vpon Hull who beinge then present tooke vpon them that office and were sworne for the dewe execucion thereof.

[In the margin ] An accion of trespas removed fourthe of the courte. Vpon ye Showinge of the charter was remitted to be tried heare
Md that george palmes Richerd palmes thelder Richerd palmes ye yonger and xpistofer allyson beinge Sewed by Iohn thorneton of this towne alderman in ye Quenes Maiesties courte before the saide Maiour and Sheriffe vpon an accion of trespas for their forcyble enterie into the mansion howse of the said Iohn Thorneton in Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid did by sute maide to the Lorde president and counsell in the northe partes procure the Quenes Maiestes lettre Directed to the saime Thorneton commaundinge him to stay and Surcease the said sute and if he had any iust cawse against them to exhibitt his Bill before the said

Lord president and counsell whiche lettre beinge delivered to the said Iohn Thorneton he maid relacion thereof to the said mr Maiour and aldermen and they pervsinge their charters perceived the removinge thereof to be contrary the contents of their said charter and therefore Sent one with their charter to the said Lorde president and counsell who after they had with good advise and deliberacion weied and considered so muche of the said charter as concerned ye auctorytie given to the said maioir and Sheriffe for holden of pleas within the said courte before them. did order and decree yat the said matter shulde be remitted to be tried before the said maiour and Sheriffe accordinge to the tenor of yeir chartre and the liberties of the said towne, as by the Decree thereof maide, hereafter verbatim ensewinge more plainely doithe and may appeare /

Whereas the defendant and also his attorneis in the courte at Hull were commawnded by processe ffrom this courte to stay an accion by him commensed against the said pleintifes before the Sheriffe of the towne of Kingeston vpon Hull that vntilll fourther order were taken therein by this courte / ffor as muche as it nowe appeared to this courte by the charter of ye said towne of Kingeston vpon Hull that the maiour & Sheriffe of the sayme towne for ye tyme beinge have auctorytie by force of their said charter to holde [plee?] of all accions comensed within the said towne, and have here in yis courte by force of their said charter to have the said accion commenced by the said defendant to be tried in the said towne before the said sheriffe, Therefore the parties be nowe remitted by the Lorde president and counsell to trye the said accion commensed against the said pleintifes by the said defendant

before the said sherif of Kingeston vpon Hull or the maiour & Sheriffe of the said towne, And the matter no fourther to procede in this courte against the said defendant /

By vertewe of whiche decree the Quenes Maieste lettre was directed to the said Iohn Thorneton signifyinge vnto him yat her highnes pleasor was yat he shoulde procede in the same accion against ye said george palmes Richerd palmes and other, her maiestes lettres to him before addressed and delivered to the contrary not with standinge / wherevpon the saime Iohn Thorneton proceded in the said Sute before ye said maiour & Sheriffe /
[In the margin ] a Lease to Iohn fairbairne of a tenament in ye butchery Rent viijs
Md that the present Day of marche in the xvth yeare of ye Reigne of our sovereigne Lady Elizabeth the Quenes moste excellent Maieste the Maiour and Burgesses with one full assent and consent did Seale with their common Seale and as their Dede deliver vnto Iohn ffairbairne of Kingeston vpon Hull marriner a lease of a messuage or tennament their in the butchery for xxjtie yeares from martinmas Last past for ye yearely rent of eight Shillinges And at whitsonday and martynmas by even porcions And ye said Iohn ffairbairne standithe chairged with all manner of reparacions.

Md that Thomas Awchiin of ottringham in the countie of Yorke gent for that he beinge no Burgesse of this towne and yett solde here Scottishe fishe to Straingers hither repairinge & not burgess contrary to the liberties auncient customes and orders of the sayme towne was by the said maiour and aldermen assessed and adiudged to pay for a fyne to ye vse of ye maiour and Burgesses xxs whiche same the said thomas awchin Dyd pay to william foxley then common officer of Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid /

Item the sayme Thomas Awchin was Likewise assessed and adiudged to pay for a fyne to ye vse afforesaid xls for Sellinge within Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid hoppes and other thinges to Straingers beinge no burgesses, whiche somme he likewise Sent to the Paied ye william foxley .

Item the saime Maiour and aldermen did assesse and adiudge Mr george Jackeson of the citie of London to pay for a fine to the vse of the Maiour and burgesses of Kingeston vpon Hull the somme of xxs for that he beinge no burgesse of this towne Did Sell certein waires here contrary to ye auntyent liberties customes and orders of this towne. whiche somme he paied to the said william foxley to the vse afforesaid

Item george Kinge of yairmouthe was by the said maiour and aldermen assessed to pay for a fine to ye vse afforesaid xxxiij iiij / for he beinge a strainger and no burgesse Did Sell theare certein barrelled ffishe contrary to the liberties customes and ordinances afforesaid / whiche somme he likewise paied to the said william foxley for ye vse afforesaid

adiudge Andro Bewicke of newecastell to pay for a fine to ye vse afforesaid xiijs iiijd for yat he so beinge a strainger and no burgesse solde Salt heare contrary the auncient liberties customes and orders of the towne whiche somme he paid to the said william foxley

Item Iohn [Somne?] servant to george Kinge of Lynne was by the said maiour and aldermen assessed to pay to ye vse afforesaid five xxs for Sellinge five tunnes of Secke here his said maister beinge no burgesse which somme the said Iohn [?Sonine] did pay to the said William foxley

Item the said maiour & aldermen did assesse thomas adwardes servant to Lawrence milles of ye cytie of London clotheworker to pay for a fine to ye vse afforesaid xx for Sellinge heare certein bastedes of his maisters his maister beinge no burgesse / whiche somme was paied to the said William foxley /

Md that that [sic] the xxtie day of marche in the yeare affore said Richerd nicolson was admitted to be the parishe clarke of the trinitie churche in Kingeston vpon Hull and it was then agreed by the said Maiour and aldermen assembled together in their counsell howse within the guild hawle that he shoulde have for his for his fee or waiges only as folowithe viz the accustomed quarterainge of the parishioners the vsuall proffittes for towlinge of ye belles belonging to ye parishe clarke the Surplisse fees and yerely xlvs for kepinge the clocke and chyme /

Item the sayme day and yere the said maiour and aldermen for and in the nayme of the maiour & burgesses of Kingeston vpon Hull Did Seale with the common Seale and Deliver as ye Dede of ye said maiour and burgesses vnto Richerd cotes glover a Lease of a messuage or tennament in Kingeston vpon Hull afforesaid in a streete their called ye churche Laine for xxjtie yeares ffrom martynmas Last past for ye yearely rent of xls paiable at whitson and martynmas by even porcions / And the said Richerd cotes standithe chairged with all manner of reparacions
[In the margin ] a lease to mr Thomas dalton of ye moitie of a tennament in sulcotes & of iij closes their Rent xjd
Item the day and yeare afforesaid the said maiour and burgesses with one full assent and consent did seale with their common Seale and as their Dede delyver vnto thomas Dalton alderman a lease dated ye first day of awguste Anno Elizabeth etc decimo quarto of ye moitie or one halfe of a messuage or tennament in Sulcotes in holdernes in ye countie of yorke for xxjtie yeares ffrom martynmas whiche shalbe in ye yeare of our Lorde god 1576. for ye yearely rent of xjs And the said thomas Dalton standithe chairged with all reparacions & chairges

Md that the most Reverent ffather in god the Lorde archbisshoppe his graice of Yorke did commende by his lettre to the said maiour and aldermen Mr griffyn bryskyn to be their preacher whom they admitted and agreed yt he shulde have ye vicaridge howse to be repaired to ye costes of ye maiour and burgesses and to have for his fee yearely xlli quarterly paid ye manner & order howe ye saime ys to be paid ys delyvered to [?ye maiers] commen officer

At Bisshopethorpe xxijtie Aprilis Anno domine 1573
Mr Thorneton and Mr clarkeson aldermen of Hull Sent by the Maior and bench their and sufficyently auctorised to conclude with me the said archbisshop for plaicing of a preacher within the said towne to receive a convenient stipende for his travaile bestowed in that behalfe / after some communicacion passed to and fro, in thende doe offer to Stande to suche direction in the sayme as I the said arch bisshoppe shall thincke good. Wherevpon I have moved them yat a Learned graive preacher may have a yerely stipend of xlli and an howse meaninge yat the vicar of Hessill and Hull (who is sent for to give his assent herevnto) shall surrendour into the handes of me the said archbisshoppe to ye vse of ye said maiour and aldermen of Hull all his profittes dewe vnto him within Hull affors[aid] and all his howse and howses their which all and sing[ular] their appurtenances towardes the dischairginge of ye curates waiges to be borne by the said maiour and aldermen and townes men of Hull. Provided alwaies yt the said preacher shall ffrom time to time be asistinge in ye ministracion of ye holy communyon, Baptismne et cetera as necessitie or occascion shall require Provided also yat the order shall stande only duringe ye good Lykinge of ye towne afforesaid beinge a thinge procedinge merely of their owne good willes and not to binde the inhabitants of ye said towne to any fourther chairdge or contribucion for ye sustentacion of ye said vicar or his successors then before ye conclusion of this agrement was [f. 106v.] accustomed or otherwise dewe by lawe Yt is also thought reasonable and requisite that the said maiour and aldermen shall dischairge the said vicar of repayringe the chauncell of the churche of Hull and repayringe the howses with their appurtenances in Hull to the said vicar belonginge And also dischairge the quite rente in goinge owt of the said howses to the Quenes Maieste Item that they the said maiour and alderman shall dischairge the said vicar of halfe his tenthes and subsedies dewe to the Quenes Maiestie /

Melchior Smithe vicar of hessill and Hull beinge moved to surrender vnto ye handes of me the said archbishoppe to the vse of the maiour and aldermen of Hull and all his proffittes due unto him within Hull afforesaid and also his howse and howses their with all and singular their appurtenances towardes the dischairdginge of the curaites Waiges and the Stipende of a preacher beinge to the summe of xllo yearely by the said maiour & aldermen to be susteined and to have contynuaunce so longe as it shalbe thought good to me the said archbisshoppe and my successors with consent of the said Maiour and aldermen of Hull Awnwereth as followithe viz that he liketh well of ye premisses and ys content willingly to give his assent thereto and in testimony thereof haithe subscribed these presentes with his owne hande
